WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA — Purdue carved up Iowa’s defense in a lopsided win in Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers led by as many as 26 points in an 86-70 win.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes were without injured center Luka Garza for the third straight game. McCaffery says his injured ankle is not yet 100 percent.

Tyler Cook led the Hawkeyes with 24 points but says there were too many defensive breakdowns.

The Hawks are 0-3 in the Big Ten and will try to get things turned around Sunday at home against Nebraska.

IOWA CITY — The 19th ranked Iowa Hawkeye women held off a late comeback by Nebraska for a 77-71 win in Iowa City. It snapped the Huskers’ nine game Big Ten road winning streak.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder, who says the Hawkeyes had too many turnovers at crunch time.

Megan Gustafson led the way for Iowa with 28 points and 17 rebounds. Mason City native Makenzie Meyer played 32 minutes, scoring two points and handing out five assists. Iowa is now 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference and will host Wisconsin Monday night in a game you’ll hear on KGLO starting at 7 o’clock.

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt won eight matches as the Wildcats downed Clear Lake 38-29 in a North Central Conference dual last night in Humboldt, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB. Clear Lake picked up pins from Braxton Doebel at 152, Kade Hambly at 220 and Sam Nelson at 113. The Lions’ top-ranked wrestler Eric Faught won by technical fall in the second period at 132 pounds, while Thomas Gansen at 160 and Connor O’Tool at 170 also picked up wins. Clear Lake travels to the Forest City Invitational tomorrow.

TORONTO (AP) — Zach Parise broke a tie off a turnover early in the third period and the Minnesota Wild rallied to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Thursday. Auston Matthews lost the puck to Parise, who beat goalie Michael Hutchinson high over his glove at 4:21 for his 18th goal of the season.
