NEW HAMPTON — Clear Lake hits the road to visit New Hampton in Class 2A District 3 football tonight. The Lions have posted three straight shutouts to start district play, and coach Jared DeVries says his defense has stepped up tremendously since beating Garner-Hayfield-Ventura by a point in the third week of play.

DeVries says New Hampton will provide his team another tough test.

New Hampton is tied with Clear Lake’s final opponent of the regular season, Iowa Falls-Alden, for second place in the district with a 2-1 record. You can hear the Clear Lake-New Hampton game tonight on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and starting with the pre-game at about 6:45 with kickoff scheduled for 7:30.



JOHNSTON — Mason City hits the road to face Johnston in Class 4A District 6 play. The Mohawks dropped a 17-13 decision at Des Moines East last week, and coach Brandon Krusey says he was pleased with his team’s effort and attitude.

Johnston is 4-3 overall and sits at 2-1 in the district. Krusey hopes to see consistency from his squad against the Dragons tonight.

ST. ANSGAR — Newman faces a tough task tonight as they travel to 2nd-ranked St. Ansgar in Class A District 4 play. The Knights are 2-5 overall after stepping outside of the district, falling to Grundy Center last week. Now they face a Saints squad that has the second-highest yardage on offense, rushing for 3032 of their 3227 total yards. Jack Sievert leads St. Ansgar with 1297 yards rushing at 26 touchdowns, while Ryan Cole has rushed for 727 yards and 13 touchdowns. MASON CITY — The Newman girls and West Fork boys are the team champions of this year’s Top of Iowa Conference cross country meet, held on the NIACC campus in Mason City on Thursday afternoon.

== The Newman girls placed three in the top ten to capture the team title with 53 points. Nashua-Plainfield was second with 85 points, while Osage was third with 95. Abby Christians of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura won the girls race in a time of 19:53, with Lindsey Davidson of Northwood-Kensett finishing second in 20:38. Olivia Schissel and Chloe Nelson of Newman finished back-to-back in seventh and eight place in times of 21:31 and 21:32.

== West Fork had three in the top nine to win the boys team crown with 64 points. Newman was second with 98 points, while St. Ansgar was third with 106. Riley Witt of St. Ansgar won the boys race in 17:04, with Jon Koester of Eagle Grove finishing as the runner-up five seconds behind.
