BOONE — The 4th-ranked NIACC men’s basketball team dropped a 107-63 decision to 5th-ranked DMACC in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference contest Saturday, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. DMACC led 46-33 at the half. NIACC was led by Quentin Hardrict with 14 points. Wendell Matthews scored 11 points with nine rebounds and Deundra Roberson scored 13 points. DMACC was led by Clear Lake native Zach Lester with 27 points.

 

== On the women’s side, 6th-ranked NIACC topped DMACC 77-62. NIACC (16-1 overall, 3-0 in the ICCAC) led 38-37 at the half and opened up a 60-51 lead after three quarters. Freshman Sydney Wetlaufer led the Lady Trojans with a career-high 27 points, including five 3-point goals, and career-best seven rebounds. Wetlaufer’s previous career-high in points was 26 against Sinclair CC on Dec. 30. NIACC also received 18 points and seven rebounds from sophomore Autam Mendez, 15 points and seven rebounds from freshman Sierra Morrow and 11 points from freshman Allie Negen. Sophomore Kelcie Hale had eight assists for NIACC, which has won four straight.

 

Both NIACC teams return to action Wednesday at home against Iowa Lakes. The women’s game is slated to start at 5:30 with the men’s game at 7:30. You can hear both games on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com.

 

 

IOWA CITY — The home court winning streak for the Iowa Hawkeye women is still alive. Iowa outscored 12th ranked Indiana 14-8 in the second overtime for a 91-85 win. The Hawkeyes have won 30 straight at home and move to 4-1 in the Big Ten. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder.

Kathleen Doyle led Iowa with 31 points and 10 assists.

Iowa’s home court winning streak is the second longest in the nation.

Mason City native Makenzie Meyer scored 17 points and had three assists and two steals. Iowa hits the road this week, playing at Minnesota on Thursday and Wisconsin on Sunday.

 

 

IOWA CITY — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says with a short bench the leadership of senior forward Ryan Kriener has been even more important. Kriener had seven points and six rebounds in Iowa’s 67-49 win over 12th ranked Maryland on Friday night.

McCaffery says the Hawkeyes will need another complete effort on Tuesday night when they visit Northwestern.

Tipoff in Evanston tomorrow night is scheduled for 7 o’clock, with the pre-game starting at 6 o’clock on AM-1300 KGLO.

 

 

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Rasir Bolton had 23 points and six assists, Tyrese Haliburton added 15 points and eight assists and Iowa State subdued Oklahoma 81-68 on Saturday night.

The Cyclones (8-7, 1-2 Big 12) closed the first half on a 12-0 run capped by a 30-foot buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Haliburton to take a 42-25 lead.

Iowa State, which snapped a three-game losing streak, used a 9-0 spurt early in the second half to build a 26-point lead and the Sooners (11-4, 2-1) never cut the deficit to single digits.

Iowa State – which gave big man George Conditt IV his first start of the season – enjoyed a boost from bench players such as Tre Jackson, who scored 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting from 3-point range. Fellow backup Terrence Lewis added 10.

Brady Manek led the Sooners with 17 points and Austin Reaves added 12 points and five rebounds.

 

 

SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI — AJ Green had 28 points as Northern Iowa routed Missouri State 80-57. Green shot 6 for 8 on 3-pointers with Panthers 13 of 22 from the arc as a team. Isaiah Brown had 19 points and nine rebounds for Northern Iowa (14-2, 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference). Trae Berhow added 12 points. Austin Phyfe had 10 rebounds for the visitors. Isiaih Mosley had 15 points for the Bears. Tulio Da Silva added 13 points, going over 1,000 for his career, and grabbed seven rebounds. Gaige Prim had 10 points.

 

 

SIOUX CITY — Anna Deets had 21 points to lead #11/4A Mason City over #1/3A Heelan of Sioux City 54-43 in Sioux City on Saturday. Mason City improves to 6-5 with the win and will host Marshalltown as part of a doubleheader that was postponed from Friday to tonight. FOREST CITY — The Clear Lake girls picked up a 65-58 win at Forest City on Saturday afternoon. Sara Faber had 29 points while Darby Dodd added 12 to lead the Lions, who improve to 9-1 on the season and will host Algona tomorrow night in North Central Conference play.

 

 

FOREST CITY — Forest City outscored Clear Lake 21-14 in the first quarter and 15-11 in the fourth quarter for a 54-52 win in non-conference basketball Saturday. Andrew Formanek had 19 points while Kody Kearns added 14 to lead Clear Lake, as the Lions fall to 7-2 on the season and will host Algona tomorrow night. Noah Miller had 27 for Forest City. The Indians are now 7-6 and will travel to Eagle Grove tomorrow night.

CLEAR LAKE — Fort Dodge had nine champions as they cruised to winning the team title at the Clear Lake Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday. The Dodgers had 296 points, with Charles City finishing second with three wrestlers finishing second and 164 ½ points. Clear Lake finished eighth with 96 points, with their lone champion being Thomas Gansen at 160 pounds.

 

 

CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that the Cleveland Browns are hiring Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as their coach. Stefanski accepted the position Sunday, a day after Minnesota lost in the playoffs. That’s according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the sides have yet to finalize a contract. An official announcement is expected Monday. The 37-year-old Stefanski was one of eight candidates to interview with the Browns. They fired Freddie Kitchens after going 6-10 this season. The Browns will next hire a new general manager.

 

 

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Elias Pettersson scored his 21st goal and fellow All-Star Jacob Markstom stopped 23 shots in the Vancouver Canucks’ 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday. Bo Horvat added two goals — the second into an empty net with 5.7 seconds left — and Troy Stecher also scored the Canucks. They’ve won nine of 11 and picked up their second win in two days. Devan Dubnyk made 26 saves, and Marcus Foligno scored for Minnesota, The Wild were held to 24 total shots after averaging 40 in their previous three games.
