NEW YORK (AP) — Jake Odorizzi and the Minnesota bullpen suddenly went wild, allowing seven straight batters to reach base despite not hitting a single fair ball and letting Noah Syndergaard and the New York Mets stroll past the Twins 9-6. One day after the teams set a Citi Field record by totaling 10 home runs in the Twins’ 14-8 romp, the Mets barely had to swing to build a big lead. A startling stretch saw Odorizzi and two relievers combine to walk six and hit a batter with a pitch without getting an out.

PELLA — The NIACC baseball team split their doubleheader against the Central College JV in Pella on Wednesday afternoon. In the opener, Central pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-3 seven-inning win. Will Sturek and Gabe Eckstaine each knocked in a run in the game. The Trojans pounded out 15 hits in the second game, winning 15-0 in five innings. Fox Leum had a homer, two doubles and five runs batted in to lead NIACC. NIACC is 14-17 overall and is scheduled to host Southeastern in a four-game conference series Saturday and Sunday.

NEW YORK CITY — Iowa’s Megan Gustafson is headed to the WNBA. The national player of the year was taken in the second round of the draft by the Dallas Wings. That was lower than expected.

Gustafson led the Hawkeyes to the Big Ten Tournament title and a trip to the Elite Eight. Iowa State’s Bridget Carleton was a second round selection of the Connecticut Sun. Carleton was the Big 12 player of the year.

Four-time WNBA champion Minnesota had a busy draft, selecting Napheesa Collier of Connecticut in the first round, then Jessica Shepard of Notre Dame and Cierra Dillard of Buffalo in the second round. They also traded Natisha Hiedeman, whom they drafted 16th to Connecticut for Lexie Brown. They drafted Kenisha Bell of Minnesota in the third round.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets secured the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs with a 99-95 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Nikola Jokic led Denver with 29 points and 14 rebounds. The Nuggets trailed 95-84 with four minutes left before finishing with a 15-0 run.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves will make hiring a new president of basketball operations their first offseason priority. The fates of general manager Scott Layden and interim head coach Ryan Saunders have yet to be decided. Tom Thibodeau, who was fired Jan. 6, held the dual role of president of basketball operations and head coach.

INDIANOLA – The NIACC women’s golf team placed second at the Simpson College Invitational on Wednesday.

NIACC shot a season-best 388 at the Indianola Country Club. The Lady Trojans opened their season with a 396 last week in a dual meet against Mount Mercy University.

Graceland University was the team champion with a 374. DMACC was third with a 390 and Southwestern was fourth with a 393.

NIACC was led by sophomore Ashley Alert with an 87, which was third in the individual medalist competition. Southwestern’s Bianca Finley was the individual medalist with an 80.

The 87 by Alert was one off her career best round of 86 at the Iowa Wesleyan Tiger Classic last October.

Also for the Lady Trojans, Sydney Fullerton shot a 99, Morgan Luecht shot a 100 and Jordyn Barragy shot a 102.

NIACC returns to action Sunday and Monday at the Iowa Central Invitational at the Fort Dodge Country Club.

IOWA CITY — Junior tackles Tristan Wirfs and Alaric Jackson anchor an Iowa offensive line that must replace three starters off last year’s team that finished 9-4. Both have seen action since their freshman year.

That’s offensive line coach Tim Polasek who says Wirfs and Jackson have become the leaders of a unit that returns six players who saw extensive time on the field last season.

Polasek says Solon native Tyler Linderbaum is making a quick transition to center. The former high school All-American made the move from defensive line in the off season.

Iowa will have their final practice on April 26th .
