MASON CITY – The NIACC men’s basketball team moved up a spot to No. 7 in the NJCAA Division II poll released Wednesday.

NIACC (21-3 overall, 10-1 ICCAC) was No. 8 in the Feb. 12 poll and gained a pair of wins last week (121-101 over Little Priest Tribal College and 109-53 over the Graceland University JV).

The No. 7 ranking is the highest for the Trojans since they were No. 3 in the Dec. 4, 2012 poll.

Potomac State is ranked No. 1 and Schoolcraft is ranked No. 2. Kirkwood is No. 8 in this week’s poll.

NIACC, which has won nine straight games, returns to action tonight at Iowa Lakes in a conference contest.

 

 

 

MASON CITY – The NIACC women’s basketball team remained No. 2 in the NJCAA Division II poll released Wednesday.

The Lady Trojans (20-5 overall) moved up to No. 2 with a 68-62 win over Kirkwood on Feb. 9. They topped Little Priest Tribal College 101-66 in their lone game last week.

NIACC has been in the top 10 in all 11 polls so far this season. The Lady Trojans were ranked 10th in the preseason poll.

Illinois Central is ranked No. 1 and Kirkwood is ranked fifth. The Lady Trojans have split with Illinois Central and Kirkwood this season.

NIACC, which has won eight straight games, returns to action tonight at Iowa Lakes in a conference contest.

 

 

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Wyatt Lohaus had 22 points as Northern Iowa easily defeated Missouri State 63-43 on Wednesday night.

Isaiah Brown had 15 points and six rebounds for Northern Iowa (13-15, 8-7 Missouri Valley Conference). Spencer Haldeman added 12 points. AJ Green had 10 points for the visitors.

Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the first 20 minutes. Northern Iowa trailed 19-17 heading to the locker room at halftime, but the Panthers came back in the second half to earn the victory. Both teams set season lows for scoring in the first half. The Panthers’ 17 first-half points were the lowest of the season for the visitors, while the 19 points in the first half for the Bears marked the fewest of the season for the hosts.

Jarred Dixon had 14 points for the Bears (15-13, 9-6), whose four-game winning streak ended with the loss.

 

 

BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA — A win over Maryland has put the 10th ranked Iowa women in the driver’s seat for the Big Ten regular season title. The road for coach Lisa Bluder’s team is not easy. The Hawkeyes play the next two away from home, including tonight’s visit to Indiana.

Bluder says the Hawkeyes have a chance to earn a championship and validate their national ranking.

You can hear the Iowa-Indiana game on AM-1300 KGLO tonight starting at about 6:45 with the pre-game, with tipoff scheduled for 7 o’clock.

 

 

NORMAN, OKLAHOMA — The Iowa State women scored 31 points in the third quarter to blow the game open in Wednesday afternoon’s 91-70 win at Oklahoma. Bridget Carleton had 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead ISU.

The Cyclones are now 10-4 and tied for second place in the Big 12. They host top ranked Baylor on Saturday.

A big run to open the third quarter put the game away for Iowa State.

That’s Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly who says Baylor will provide the ultimate test.

 

 

CEDAR FALLS — The West Gym in Cedar Falls is sold out for Thursday night’s wrestling dual between 11th ranked Iowa State and 17th ranked Northern Iowa. Cyclone coach Kevin Dresser says the Panthers will be motivated.

Dresser says it will be an electric atmosphere.

UNI has won the last two duals in the series, including 31-7 a year ago. Panther coach Doug Schwab.

Eight of Iowa State’s 10 wrestlers are nationally ranked. UNI has six ranked.

 

 

 

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins have acquired center Charlie Coyle from the Minnesota Wild for center Ryan Donato and a conditional fifth-round pick. Coyle represents a significant forward upgrade for Boston, which has won six in a row to move into second place in the Atlantic Division. The 26-year-old Coyle has 10 goals and 18 assists this season but no points in his past seven games.
