AMES — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says multiple running backs will play in Saturday’s season opener against Northern Iowa. Several players have been battling to replace David Montgomery.

Kene Nwangwu tweaked his hamstring during a scrimmage. Campbell expects a starter or a rotation to eventually emerge.

Campbell is familiar with new Panther quarterback Will McElvain. The former Des Moines Lincoln standout originally intended to walk on at ISU as a defensive back before changing his mind and walking on at UNI as a quarterback.

Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley says the Panthers are ready for a game.

The Panthers are ranked 18th in the preseason FCS poll.

Farley named redshirt freshman Will McElvain as the starting quarterback. The former Des Moines Lincoln standout edged out sophomore Jacob Keller for the job.

Farley says this is by far the best Cyclone team he has coached against. Iowa State enters the season nationally ranked for the first time since 1978.

Kickoff at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday is scheduled for 11 o’clock

MIAMI, OHIO —- Miami of Ohio coach Chuck Martin says experience at quarterback is one of the concerns heading into Saturday night’s season opener at 20th ranked Iowa. Nate Stanley is set to begin his third season as the Hawkeye starter under center.

Martin says the Redhawks have not settled on a quarterback. They need to replace Gus Ragland, who passed for 17 touchdowns a year ago and rushed for seven more.

These two teams met in 2016 in Iowa City with the Hawkeyes claiming a 45-21 win.

Martin says the Redhawks must limit mistakes.

Kickoff on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium is scheduled for 6:30, with the pre-game starting at 4:30 on AM-1300 KGLO

MASON CITY — Mason City High senior Avery Mellman has verbally committed to play baseball at South Dakota State. Mellman tweeted his decision on Monday night, saying he was excited to make the announcement that he’ll be a Jackrabbit. Mellman in his junior year for the Mohawks hit .310, had an on-base percentage of .437, a slugging percentage of .550 with 18 runs batted in. Mellman was selected as an all-conference first team player and was a second-team north-central all-district shortstop. The Jackrabbits play in the North Central Conference and were 28-22 last season.
