MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — As the Minnesota Twins move closer to a postseason berth, José Berríos’ confidence grows.
Berríos pitched into the eighth inning to win his second straight start, Mitch Garver hit a go-ahead double and the Twins rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 Monday night.
Seeking their first AL Central title since 2010, the Twins opened a five-game lead over second-place Cleveland. At 92-58 with 12 games left, Minnesota is assured of its best record since finishing 94-68 in 2010.
Given an extra day of rest between starts, Berríos (13-8) allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. He was rewarded with a standing ovation when he was removed.
Tyler Duffey finished the eighth, and Sergio Romo allowed Eloy Jiménez’s homer leading off the ninth before getting an out. Taylor Rogers needed just eight pitches to finish a six-hitter for his 27th save in 33 chances.

IOWA CITY — Iowa kicker Keith Duncan has been named the Big Ten special teams player of the week. Duncan kicked four field goals in the Hawkeyes’ 18-17 win at Iowa State. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says special teams played a major part in the win.
The kicking game has shined in a 3-0 start. Duncan has been perfect on all eight field goal attempts.
Iowa defensive back D.J. Johnson is the Big Ten freshman of the week. He had eight tackles and broke up two passes against the Cyclones.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa says it has contacted Iowa State after the Hawkeye Marching Band was subjected to “inappropriate actions” during Saturday’s football game between the two rivals.
The statement from Iowa athletic director Gary Barta on Monday did not include details and said only that “we have contacted Iowa State athletics administration and are working to gather additional information.”
No. 18 Iowa rallied to beat Iowa State 18-17 on the road. The game at Jack Trice Stadium lasted nearly 6 ½ hours after a pair of weather delays, and some fans from Iowa State’s student section ran onto the field during the second interruption before being sent back by security.
Iowa’s band, like the team itself, was booed heavily by the Iowa State student section when it entered the stadium before kickoff.
AMES — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says the Cyclones need to bounce back in a hurry as they prepare to host Louisiana-Monroe. The Warhawks were idle last week after a 45-44 overtime loss at Florida State.
Campbell says Louisiana-Monroe has a lot of talent.
Campbell says even without injured center Colin Newell the offensive line made major progress against the Hawkeyes.
Kickoff at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday is scheduled for 11 o’clock.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has been named the WNBA Rookie of the Year. Collier was one of four unanimous selections on the All-Rookie Team, along with Indiana Fever center Teaira McCowan, Dallas Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale, and Las Vegas Aces guard Jackie Young. Phoenix Mercury forward Brianna Turner also was chosen. The 6-foot-1 Collier was drafted out of Connecticut with the sixth overall pick last spring. She’s the first Lynx winner of the award since Maya Moore in 2011.
