MASON CITY — Newman senior Sammy Kratz has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at North Iowa Area Community College. Kratz says it was an easy decision to play for the Trojans.

Kratz says he’s working for another successful season in a Newman uniform before heading to NIACC.

NIACC coach Travis Hergert says he’s happy to have another Newman athlete be a part of his squad.

Kratz in his junior season was 5-1 with a 3.39 ERA. Opposing hitters batting average against Kratz was .184.

MASON CITY — For NIACC coach Travis Hergert, he has some holes to fill on his coaching staff after two of his assistant coaches have taken jobs with major league baseball organizations.

Hergert will be entering his eighth season as NIACC’s head coach this spring with an overall record of 265-140-2

IOWA CITY — After being eliminated from the Big Ten West race Iowa returns home to face seventh ranked Minnesota. The Hawkeyes are 6-3 after a 24-22 loss at Wisconsin.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz who says the Hawkeyes will need to bounce back in a hurry. The Gophers are 9-0 and closing in on the division title.

Ferentz says sophomore quarterback Tanner Morgan has been a big part of Minnesota’s success. Morgan has 21 touchdown passes and only four interceptions.

Ferentz says the Gophers balance helps create big plays in the passing game.

Ferentz says the Gophers have bought into the rebuilding job of third year coach P.J. Fleck

Kickoff at Kinnick Stadium is scheduled for 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, with the pre-game at 1 o’clock on AM-1300 KGLO

CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley says he is cautiously optimistic as the Panthers get set to visit South Dakota State. At 7-3 the Panthers are ranked fifth in the FCS Coaches Poll and with two wins to close the regular season could get a top four seed in the playoffs.

Farley lists star receiver Isaiah Weston as questionable for the game after he was injured in a win over Indiana State. Farley says it is not a repeat of the knee injury that forced Weston to miss last season.

South Dakota State has dropped two of three games since losing quarterback J’Bore Gibbs to a knee injury early in an October 26th loss to top ranked North Dakota State. The Jackrabbits have fallen to ninth in the coaches poll.

Kickoff in Brookings is scheduled for 2 o’clock on Saturday

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Rasir Bolton scored 17 points, Solomon Young added 15 and Iowa State rallied from an early double-digit deficit to overwhelm Northern Illinois 70-52 on Tuesday.

Michael Jacobson scored nine points with 12 rebounds for the Cyclones (2-1), who went on a 26-6 run to open the second half and scored 55 of the game’s final 81 points.

The Cyclones, thanks to a cavalcade of missed 3s and rebounds, fell behind by as much as 26-15 in the first half. Iowa State cut it to 34-31 by halftime, and it didn’t take its first lead until Bolton’s 3-point play put the Cyclones ahead 38-36.

Tyrese Haliburton then tossed an alley-oop to George Conditt that made it a 46-40 game and woke up the crowd. Haliburton capped a stretch of 13 straight points with a layup that pushed Iowa State’s lead to 17.

The Cyclones won despite shooting a ghastly 3 of 25 on 3s.

Eugene German had 24 points to lead NIU — though he needed 27 shots to get there.
